To find mentors who are women or minorities for recent graduates in entry-level construction positions, consider these tips:

    1. Connect with professional associations or organizations that focus on promoting diversity and inclusion in the construction industry.

    2. Attend networking events, conferences, and workshops specifically designed for women or minority professionals in construction.

    3. Reach out to local chapters of organizations like the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) or the National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC).

    4. Utilize online platforms and forums dedicated to connecting mentors and mentees in the construction field.

    5. Seek referrals from colleagues, professors, or career counselors who may have connections to diverse professionals in construction.

    6. Leverage social media platforms to engage with and follow influential women or minority leaders in the construction industry who may be open to mentoring.

    7. Approach construction companies with established diversity and inclusion programs to inquire about mentorship opportunities.

Remember to be proactive, persistent, and respectful in your search for mentors, and be prepared to clearly articulate your goals and aspirations in the construction industry.

  4. We do a little bit of everything in the residential field. A majority of our work is renovations which consist of flooring, decks, additions, drywall, bathrooms and kitchens. We take on everything big and small. We take on siding, concrete and roofing as well but right now we sub most of that out. We're growing fast! With the work load coming in we need trained professionals that I can trust to leave on site. I'd like to build up multiple crews so we can continue to expand and grow. If you have any further questions please reach out

Here are five valid points on how to be successful as a woman in non-traditional careers like construction:

    1. Build a strong support network: Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, colleagues, and industry professionals who can provide guidance, advice, and encouragement. Seek out female role models who have succeeded in non-traditional careers in construction and learn from their experiences.

    2. Develop a strong skill set: Invest in acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge for your chosen career path in construction. Take advantage of training programs, certifications, and educational opportunities to enhance your expertise. Building a strong skill set will not only boost your confidence but also demonstrate your competence to others.

    3. Network and establish connections: Networking is crucial in any industry, including construction. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and participate in conferences or seminars to expand your professional network. Establishing connections can lead to valuable opportunities, such as job referrals, partnerships, and mentorship.

    4. Be proactive and assertive: Take initiative and be proactive in pursuing opportunities within the construction industry. Seek out challenging assignments, express your interest in career advancement, and actively contribute to projects. Be assertive in communicating your ideas and opinions, and advocate for yourself to ensure that your accomplishments and potential are recognized.

    5. Embrace continuous learning and growth: The construction industry is constantly evolving, and it's important to stay up-to-date with new technologies, regulations, and industry trends. Demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt, and be open to taking on new responsibilities or roles. Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills, and position yourself as a valuable asset within the field.

Remember, success in any non-traditional career requires determination, resilience, and breaking down barriers. By leveraging your skills, building a strong support system, and actively pursuing opportunities, you can thrive as a woman in the construction industry and make a significant impact.

    Thank you, Christi & Angela

    Dear Amazing People,

I wanted to thank you for being a big part of the SC Women's Executive Leadership Luncheon.  We appreciate you.  We have taken the feedback and the new exciting ideas coming from our teams and have made some adjustments to our upcoming events.

We are canceling the event on 10/18/23, we could not plan a proper event 48 days after the incredible event on 8/28 with BMW.  We also did not want to take anything away from the Simpsonville Chamber's Women's Summit and the United Way Women's Summit which are taking place this month.

    New Programming:
January will be a Company Culture Session from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on 1/25/24.  These will be informative sessions about culture, hiring, retaining, and growing your businesses.  We will be focused intentionally on helping businesses prosper.

March will be a big surprise (on International Women's Day- all day),  We will have vendor tables and breakout sessions in several rooms, all day!

When we have more details, we will share the big news!  The upcoming events are a collaborative effort from our WCB team after monitoring the needs of our business community and bringing all the women from every industry together.  WE ARE SOOOO EXCITED to include you in March and we can't thank you enough for committing to helping uplift the incredible women in the upstate.

If you'd like to know more about January and March events, please reach out to Victoria Fusco or Alex Iacovelli (cc'd above).   We love what you are doing and we support you 100%.

    Kind regards,

  13. The WBE team at 84 Lumber has been doing some research to find the biggest challenges faced by General Contractors and then we discussed solutions. One of our best practices at 84 Lumber is finding solutions for our customers. We would love to hear any comments or suggestions. Diverse perspectives are welcome!

We started with Multifamily contractors in MA.

    Average Age: 42

    Occupation: General Contractor

    Location: Massachusetts, USA

Business Type: Construction Company specializing in multifamily building projects

    Revenue: $2 million annually

Goals: This GC is responsible for procuring building materials for his multifamily construction projects in Massachusetts. His goal is to source high-quality materials at competitive prices while ensuring timely delivery. The GC aims to build durable and energy-efficient properties that meet or exceed building codes and regulations. The GC is looking to establish long-term relationships with reliable suppliers to streamline its material procurement process.

    Challenges Faced:

    1. The General Contractor faces the challenge of finding trustworthy suppliers who can consistently provide high-quality building materials. He needs suppliers who can meet his specific project requirements and deliver materials on time.

    2. The General Contractor must balance the need for quality materials with cost considerations. He is constantly seeking competitive pricing to stay within budget without compromising on the quality and durability of the building materials.

    3. Construction projects have strict timelines, and any delay in material delivery can cause disruptions and impact project schedules. The GC needs suppliers who can reliably deliver materials on time, ensuring smooth project progress.

    4. The MA Contractor must ensure that the building materials he procures comply with local and national building codes and regulations. He needs suppliers who provide documentation and certifications to verify compliance.

    5. The General Contractor is increasingly focused on sustainability and energy-efficient construction practices. He seeks suppliers who offer eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions to meet the growing demand for green buildings.

    SOLUTIONS:

    1. The GC can research and evaluate suppliers based on their reputation, customer reviews, and industry experience. He can reach out to other contractors for recommendations and conduct thorough due diligence to ensure the suppliers have a track record of reliability and quality.

    2. The GC can issue RFPs to multiple suppliers to compare pricing, quality, and delivery terms. This allows him to negotiate and select suppliers who offer competitive prices while maintaining the desired standards.

    3. Building strong relationships with suppliers is crucial for timely deliveries and favorable terms. The GC can maintain open lines of communication, establish mutually beneficial partnerships, and negotiate long-term contracts to secure reliable supply and potentially gain volume discounts.

    4. The GC should request samples and certifications from suppliers to verify the quality and compliance of materials. He can also conduct periodic on-site inspections and quality checks to ensure the materials meet the required standards.

    5. Sustainability and Energy Efficiency: The GC can prioritize suppliers who offer sustainable and energy-efficient building materials. He can explore options such as recycled materials, low-emission products, and energy-efficient systems to align with his eco-friendly construction goals.

By implementing these solutions, a General Contractor can effectively address the challenges he faces in procuring building materials for his multifamily construction projects in Massachusetts. He can establish a reliable supply chain, optimize costs, ensure compliance with regulations, and contribute to sustainable and energy-efficient building practices.
